It all started casually
5 years ago I tasted my first proper specialty coffee cup - it was a V60 in a Stockholm coffee shop. I was sitting by the window looking at the snow falling outside and thinking to myself: “What did they put in this coffee?!” - It tasted like lemons - I was blown away. The flavour in that cup was something I had never tasted before in a cup of coffee. I left the coffee shop super caffeinated and took with me a bag of those delicious beans - it had to be done.
Upon arriving home I started searching for a V60 brewer! I was determined to replicate that brew at home and make those beans sparkle my mornings in the next few days. I got the V60 and started looking for recipes and “how to videos”. I was really excited! I brewed my beans and indeed I did get a similar (although not really the same) result as I did in the coffee shop. I was happy! This was the moment that kickstarted my journey as a home barista.
The problem
From there I went in the rabbit hole and spent some greatly missed € on a bunch of different equipment like grinders, brewers, a manual espresso machine, parts to customise the espresso machine (of course) and most importantly a lot of delicious specialty coffee beans.
As my journey went on, I started to understand that each bean is unique. The road to get the most of one bean might not be the same road to get the most of another bean. It’s hardly the case where you can dial in a brew (or an espresso) the best you can on your first attempt. We learn from each brew tweaking it slightly on the next brew and so on until we get to a great cup. Having information about this process helps repeating good results.
In my case, collecting this information was done using a notebook where I would store recipes, adapt them to my coffee beans and brewing method until I would reach a desired outcome that was great for my taste. This worked. However it was not ideal for me. I wanted to be able to look through my past brews easily, have a set of recipes to easily adapt to my current coffee and understand how changes in my brews would affect the coffee in the cup. That’s where I started thinking about the Sipster app.
The solution
I wanted to build an app that would replace the notebook and allow me to have more visibility in my beans, recipes and overall brewing process - that’s when the Sipster app was born. The main purpose of our initial iteration is to help people brew more efficiently together. There are a lot of exciting opportunities to explore and make our coffee rituals more efficient, enjoyable, accessible and fun! We do have some great ideas for the future of the product and can’t wait to share them with you in the future. Stay tuned!
Sipster is launching with the ability to replace your notebook, share recipes among friends and get helpful stats on your brewing process. These are the foundations and we will keep learning with our users and the community to build a more relevant product that will help everyone get the most out of their coffee.
I hope you enjoy the app and I am super excited to see how you and your friends use it!
Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
